If there are any safeguards to detect this during importation into D2R offline D2R doesn't seem to mind as to what items are edited/bugged etc.

I have only managed to hack the experience so far.
The only person that had that link work actually had a legacy D2 character that for some reason wasn’t being accepted by D2R. However, this probably only works on offline characters.
